James F. Groves ran away from home as a young man. He succeeded in getting admitted to the University of Chicago, and by studying for a year, then withdrawing and working for a year, then studying for another year, etc., he was finally able to complete the Ph.D. there. He taught at many places, but he was best known as a professor at Ripon College, in Ripon, WI.
James F. Groves married Hyral Hagar (born 16 Jun 1889 on a farm outside of Stillwater, OK). They had three daughters and one son. The daughters were: Alice Mary Groves (born ), Genevieve Groves (born 22 Aug 1922), and Sara Groves (born ), and the son was David Groves (born ). James F. Groves died 14 Jan 1972 in Madison, WI, and his wife Hyral died 21 Jun 1958. They are buried in Ripon, WI.
