Dexter Family History
This is a small part of the history of the Dexter family descended from Gregory Dexter (1610-1700).
The early history of the Dexter family (before Christopher Dexter) given below has been taken from the following book:
Newman, S.C. 1859. Dexter Genealogy: being a record of the families descended from Rev. Gregory Dexter; with notes and biographical sketches of each parent. Providence, RI: A. Crawford Greene.
The later history (after Christopher Dexter) was taken from family records.
Gregory Dexter was born in 1610 in Olney, Northampton County, England, and died 1700. He is buried North Burial Ground, Providence, RI (PV001; I seem to recall that the marker is in section AB at the corner of Eastern Avenue and Summit Avenue). He was the first accomplished printer to come to America and fourth pastor of the First Baptist Church in Providence, RI.
He was also the equivalent of the governor of Rhode Island 1653-1654. (Learn more about the history of Rhode Island.) Gregory Dexter was a friend of Roger Williams, whose book A key into the language of America was printed by Gregory Dexter. About 1645-1646 Gregory Dexter married Abigail Fuller [or Fullerton], who was born about 1620 and died sometime after 1706. They had four sons and one daughter. One of the sons was John Dexter.
John Dexter (born 1652 in Providence, RI) married Alice Smith of Providence, RI. They had three sons and six daughters. One of the sons was Stephen Dexter.
Stephen Dexter (born 1689 in Providence, RI) married Susannah Whipple of Providence, RI. They had five sons and three daughters. One of the sons was Edward Dexter.
Edward Dexter (born 1732 in Providence, RI) married Marcy Jona. Arnold (born 1739 in Smithfield, RI). They had two sons and two daughters. One of the sons was Edward Dexter.
Edward Dexter (born 1770 in North Providence, RI, died 1860[?]) had two wives: Abby Job Smith (born 1773 in Providence, RI) and Sarah Jno. Mumford (born 1781 in Providence, RI). It is assumed that his first wife died and that he remarried. Edward Dexter had two sons and two daughters. One of the sons was Edward Dexter (it is uncertain which of his father's two wives was his mother).
Edward Dexter (born 1799 in Providence, RI) married Arvilla T. Walker (born 1803 in Seekonk, MA). They had two sons. One of them was Christopher M. Dexter.
Christopher M. Dexter (born 1826 in Seekonk, MA) married Sarah Walker[?] Jefferson[?] (born 1828 in Smithfield, RI, died 1902). They had six sons and three daughters. One of the sons was Walter M. Dexter.
Walter M. Dexter (born 1852 in Seekonk, MA) married Emily O. Potter (born 1857 in Providence, RI). They had two sons and two daughters. The sons were Gregory M. Dexter (born 3 Oct 1887 in East Providence, RI) and Earl H. Dexter (born 1891 in East Providence, RI), and the daughters were Edith Dexter (born 1889 in East Providence, RI) and Gladys Dexter (born August 20, 1893 in Providence, RI).
On 24 Nov 1934 Gregory M. Dexter married Katie Wilhelmine Jaecker (born 9 Apr 1909). They had one son Gregory Warren Dexter (born 6 Sep 1935) and two daughters Nancy Lee Dexter (born 19 Feb 1938) and Susan Marcy Dexter (born 6 Jun 1940).
Gladys Dexter married Thomas Clark Hedden from KY. For more information about the descendants of Gladys Dexter, see the section above about the history of the Hedden family.
