Katie Jaecker Dexter
Katie J. Dexter of Mattituck, NY died on January 8, 2004 at the Center for Extended Care in Amherst, MA. She was born on April 9, 1909 as Katie Wilhelmine Jaecker to Sophie and Harry C. Jaecker in Blauvelt, NY, and grew up in New York City. She lived in Scarsdale, NY for 40 years. Mrs. Dexter moved to Mattituck, NY in 1970.
She graduated from Barnard College with a B.A. in mathematics and economics. She received an M.A. from Teachers College, Columbia University and she studied two years beyond the master's degree in mathematics and guidance at Teachers College, Yeshiva University, and Sarah Lawrence College.
Katie worked as an examiner for the U.S. Civil Service Commission for 3½ years and taught mathematics for 20 years in the high schools of New Rochelle, Yonkers, and Scarsdale. She was Chairman of the Math Department in Yonkers.
Mrs. Dexter taught first aid for the American Red Cross during World War II. She was the President of the Fox Meadow School P.T.A. and Secretary of the Scarsdale Teachers Association. Katie was Trustee for six years and Treasurer for three years of the Mattituck Free Library. She was President of the Eastern Long Island Hospital Auxiliary and a Trustee and Honorary Trustee of the E.L.I.H. She was Chairman of the Opportunity Shop of the E.L.I.H. She was a 1982 recipient of the Theodore Roosevelt Award of the Nassau-Suffolk Council.
Mrs. Dexter was married for 35 years to the late Gregory M. Dexter who graduated from M.I.T. and Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute with degrees in Civil and Mechanical Engineering. She is survived by three children, Gregory Warren Dexter of Bridgeport, CT, Nancy D. Beswick of Amherst, MA, and Susan D. Moesel of Decatur, AL. She is also survived by five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was buried on Monday, January 12, 2004, in a private ceremony in The North Burial Ground in Providence, RI. The marker is in section 26 near the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Spruce Avenue.
